Major elements of the offspring care system (OCS). The MPOA/vBST inhibits the avoidance system (AHN and PAG) and activates approach responses in the ventral striatum (VTA, NAcc, VP). AHN = anterior hypothalamus; PAG = periaqueductal gray; MPOA = medial preoptic area of the hypothalamus; vBST = ventral bed of the stria terminalis; VTA = ventral tegmental area; NAcc = nucleus accumbens; VP = ventral pallidum.
